How does the deadly landslide on Vancouver's Sea to Sky highway look for the 2010 Winter Games? After all the Sea to Sky highway is the gateway the Olympic Games in Whistler. This leads us to this question: In the case of a catastrophic landslide that could very well close the highway for days, is there an alternate plan in place in case of this. Currently the answer is NO. The alternate route in and out of Whistler is on a road by the name 'Duffy Lake', which first off is gravel for the majority of the road and second off makes the trek back from Whistler over eight hours. This would be less than par for the Athletes, and spectators alike, not to mention the residents of this ever growing area. So brings this question: What about a ferry service running from Vancouver's Horseshoe Bay to Squamish? The cost of building an alternate highway to access Whistler is far to great and having said that, there is no way it would be even close to complete for the games. There was look at the a ferry service during this most recent landslide outside of Vancouver but according to the Transportation Safety Authority in Vancouver, the old 'emergency' dock in Squamish was not fit to be put back into use. So why not spend a couple of million dollars and upgrade that ferry berth. It makes complete sense, as Squamish is past the major landslide or avalanche zone. The main concern is in between a stretch from Lion's Bay to Britannia and beyond that the likely hood of a massive landslide in that area is slim. BC Ferries could have a field day with a new service between Vancouver and Squamish during the Olympics, they could probably make the money they lost on the 'Fast Ferries'...my god, what a joke they were after a hundred million or so! But this has to sound like a logical and reasonable way to solve the problem, the dock could be upgraded well in time for the Olympics, it would generate more services for the bus companies, Squamish's economy would sky rocket during the Olympics and everybody would be happy. A ferry from Vancouver to Squamish, What a concept. By the way, thank the higher powers that be that no one was injured or killed in that most recent landslide outside of Vancouver, so lets give people the option of taking the ferry or driving on the newly upgraded highway. The ferry service will provide more than just an alternate route of transportation, it will provide an option and a way out in the event of a disaster. A back up plan is a must.
