Wednesday, April 22, 2009

Organizers with the Vancouver Olympic Committee are in court today explaining to a judge why the rights of women ski jumpers aren't being violated by not allowing them to compete in the 2010 Winter Games.

The lawyer for the 15 ex-competitors and current ski jumpers has spent two days fighting for the women. His arguments explaining that the committee is supposed to abide by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and must hold a women's ski jumping event as well as a men's.

The committee however argues that because they receive government money and oversight, they make it known that the games are not a government program so the in this case the Charter does not apply.

In further arguments the committee says that the IOC has control over the games and only the IOC can make the final decision on what sports are to be contested at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

The organizers are acknowledging the cause of women's ski jumping, but their hands are tied when it comes down to adding the event to the Vancouver Olympic docket.

Over the next two days the lawyers will present their case's before the women have the opportunity to respond.
